Quebec City is the capital city of the Canadian province of Quebec, and it was founded in 1608. Tourists enjoy Quebec City for its European feel, picturesque setting and fine restaurants.

  1. Getting to Quebec City

    • Travelers (including children) from the United States must present a valid passport to enter Canada. The Jean Lasage Airport serves Quebec City. Quebec City's train station is Gare du Palais.

    The Old City

    • The old city, or Vieux Quebec, is divided into two areas, Upper Town and Lower Town. Vieux Quebec contains the most interesting tourist sights, and it features winding cobblestone streets and 17th- and 18th-century buildings. Quebec City was a fortified city, and tourists can still walk on the stone fortress walls that surround Vieux Quebec.

    Top Tourist Attractions

    • Tour La Citadelle, an early 19th-century fort; marvel at the majestic Chateau Frontenac; explore the art galleries and historic buildings in Vieux Quebec; visit the Musee de la Civilisation; soak up the sun at the monument- and fountain-filled Parc des Champs-de-Bataille.

    Getting Around

    • Quebec City is walkable, but it is hilly. There are staircases that connect the Upper and Lower towns. Tourists can also get around via the funicular, or cable car, as well as cabs and buses.

    Events

    • Quebec's Winter Carnival is an annual event held in January and February, and features snow-rafting rides, an ice sculpture competition and dogsled races. The Summer Festival, held every July, features street performances.
