The Teaching Assistant's Role
A teacher assistant's main purpose in the classroom is to provide support to the primary teacher, who will get more time to educate the students and plan lessons. While a teacher assistant is trained to do many tasks, her duties vary depending on the needs of the teacher.

Instructional Duties

A teacher assistant is used most often during instructional times, assisting students individually or in small groups.
Clerical Duties

A teacher assistant may be instructed to grade papers, file paperwork, or do typing or copying for the teacher.

Out of Classroom Duties

A teacher assistant may help transport the class to and from lunch, recess, or special classes (such as art, music, gym, and library).
Special Needs Students

Many times, a teacher assistant is hired to work with special needs students. She may provide support during the times a special education teacher is not in the classroom.
Work Environment

Many teacher assistants work in the classroom; some work with one teacher throughout the year. Others may spend some of their day with one teacher and the rest with another.
