Delta Air Lines Luggage Rules
Since Delta Air Lines started charging for checked luggage, passengers are carrying more onto the airplane. This has placed more emphasis on the gate agent's duty to assure that carry-on luggage adheres to the air carrier's requirements. Passengers must be aware of these baggage rules before heading to the airport to ensure their ease of travel.

Carry-On Baggage

Delta Air Lines allows one carry-on bag and one personal item. The bag must weigh less than 40 lbs., and the total length, width and height can not be larger than 45 inches. Personal items include laptop computers, purses, briefcases and similar items.
Checked Baggage Charges

Delta Air Lines charges $15 for the first checked bag and $25 for the second for flights in the domestic United States. The charge is collected as the bag is checked each way on a round-trip flight. As for international destinations, the first bag is free for flights to and from Europe, but there is a $50 charge each way for the second. There is no charge for the first two bags to most other international destinations, including Canada.

Checked Baggage Size Limitations

Each bag cannot weigh more than 50 lbs., and the total length, width and height cannot exceed 62 inches. Overweight and oversize bags are considered for special handling and additional charges will apply.
Exceptions to the Rules

There is no charge for up to three checked bags for first and international business class passengers and each bag can weigh up to 70 lbs., but must meet the 62 inches requirement. Military personnel traveling on official orders are not charged for up to 10 checked bags and each of those bags have a 100 lb. and 80-inch limit.
Other Checked Items

Items, such as pets, golf clubs, musical instruments, child carriers and other bulky and fragile equipment, can be checked. Each item will count as one bag and the Delta agent will assess additional charges at check-in.
Delta Connection Flights

Carry-on items that meet Delta's specification may not fit into the smaller commuter aircraft overhead compartments used for Delta connection flights. Those items will be identified and checked in at the gate by a Delta agent and returned upon exiting the aircraft.
