Types of Fiberglass Resin
There some basic types of resins designed specifically for the manufacture of structures--specifically the use of fiberglass resin in the production of automotive as well as aerospace manufacturing.
-
Identification
-
Fiberglass resin, also known as polyester resin, is a compound that hardens when mixed with another compound. Compounds like these are known as catalysts. Polyester resin can be used with fiberglass to produce a wide range of products, including vehicle components.
Gloss Resin
-
Gloss resin makes things shinier, and preserves material that is underneath. You would normally apply this resin in surfboards.
-
Flame Retardant Resin
-
Flame retardant resin allows for flammable surfaces, or surfaces that can be scorched or damaged by extreme heat, to be protected under a thin layer of this substance. It will also protect wooden surfaces.
Chemical Resistant Resin
-
Chemical resistant resin allows sensitive surfaces to be protected from overexposure to chemicals that can be harmful to them and may damage them or distort the material of the surface. Protecting something from chemical exposure might be useful in a place like a laboratory, where the tables can possibly suffer an accident.
How Polyester Resins Affect the Environment
-
Polyester resins often times emit a styrene fume, which is a health hazard. Water-extendable polyester resins have been created to help reduce this risk by reducing the amount of styrene fume and even the odor that accompanies it.
