About Tug of War

Tug of war is a group game that involves two sets of people each pulling at opposite ends of a rope. The winner of the game is determined based on the particular set of rules determined at the start of the game. It is popular among children, though it is played by people of all ages.

  1. How to Play

    • Tug of war is played by at least two people, with evenly matched teams each pulling on the ends of a long rope in order to win by one of two main methods. Professional teams consist of eight players.

    How to Win

    • One way for a team to win is to force a marker at the center of the rope to a predetermined area on the particular team's side of the area. The second way is for one team to force the other team to fall. Professional tug of war plays by the first rule.

    Professional Play

    • Professional teams compete in tug of war championships. Tug of war was an Olympic sport from 1900 to 1920.

    Origin

    • Tug of war began as early as Ancient Egyptian times, with hieroglyphics showing young men engaged in a rope-free version of the sport found in a tomb.

    Regulatory Institution

    • Tug of war as a competitive sport is regulated by the Tug of War International Federation.
