Alternatives to Disposable Diapers

Disposable diapers are clogging our landfills and disposal systems with untreated sewage. Parents and caregivers need to go back to a time when taking care of babies did not threaten Earth. There are many alternatives to disposable diapers.

Pins

A cloth diaper, diaper pins, and rubber pants used to be the common method of diapering. Today, there are also pin-less alternatives.

Diaper Wraps

Traditional cloth diapers can be worn without pins under a cover known as a diaper wrap. The diaper is folded and the snug wrap keeps it in place.

Pocket Diapers

Pocket diapers are made of a wrap with a large pocket into which a diaper is inserted. Diapers intended for use in pockets are contoured to fit the shape of a baby.

All-In-One

All-In-One diapers are a complete set: diaper, wrap, and fasteners in one. During changes, the entire AIO is removed, put in the laundry, and a fresh AIO is put on the baby.

EC: Elimination Communication

Some people forego diapers altogether. They keep baby close and get to know when the baby will need to "go."

Chlorine Free

While not entirely an alternative to disposable diapers, some shops and co-ops offer disposable diapers that are chlorine-free or made from recycled materials.
