The transit is a type of theodolite that has been used for surveying property. It was used during the 19th century movement of the railroad into the West.

Modern versions of the theodolite have electronic readings, which make them more accurate and less likely to produce errors. These devices can internally save the data, which can be transferred to laptops or PDAs.
