About Theodolite

Theodolites are measuring tools that help in construction and mapping as well as the uses listed below. This tool has changed over the years, mostly for the better, especially in regard to increased accuracy.

  1. Function

    • A theodolite is a tool used to measure horizontal and vertical angles. Some modern theodolites have movable telescopes that you can point at a specific object.

    History

    • The first true theodolite was built in Germany in 1576 by Joshua Habermel. It had a compass and a tripod.

    Gyrotheodolites

    • A gyrotheodolite is commonly used in underground operations, such as mining and tunneling. It can function at the Northern and Southern hemispheres and at the equator.

    Transit

    • The transit is a type of theodolite that has been used for surveying property. It was used during the 19th century movement of the railroad into the West.

    Modern Theodolites

    • Modern versions of the theodolite have electronic readings, which make them more accurate and less likely to produce errors. These devices can internally save the data, which can be transferred to laptops or PDAs.
