Camel Spider Myths

Myths of the camel spider found in Iraqi deserts have been around for nearly 30 years. These myths were more widely known in 2004 as a result of mass emails containing pictures of the spiders along with "facts" about them. Camel spiders have been studied and these myths have been proven wrong. Here are some of the common camel spider myths.

  1. Running

    • Camel spiders can run 25 to 30 miles per hour on the sand.

    Laying Eggs

    • Camel spiders latch on to the underside of camels and lay their eggs underneath the skin.

    Jumping

    • Camel spiders are able to jump 6 feet in the air.

    Screaming

    • Camel spiders will let out a loud scream when they are about to attack.

    Attacking

    • Camel spiders can chase humans down and bite out chunks of their flesh.

    Size

    • Camel spiders can reach sizes of 16 inches wide.
