Learning Activities for an Infant & Toddler

It is the job of infants and toddlers to learn about the world around them, and they do this primarily by observation, listening and imitation. Therefore, making everyday activities stimulating is the best way to help your child learn.

  1. Read

    • Even before your child is able to read, she is learning an appreciation for books, listening to the sounds of words and looking at pictures. When reading, point out and name objects and ask your child questions about the story.

    Talk

    • Talk to your infant or toddler about what you are doing to help build his vocabulary and begin to understand routines. Count aloud and point out colors, shapes or familiar objects and name them.

    Sing

    • Singing familiar songs teaches your child rhythm and language skills. When accompanied by actions, such as clapping or jumping, singing will also improve your child's coordination.

    Age-Appropriate Responsibility

    • Infants and young children should learn social skills such as working cooperatively with others and being responsible. Have older infants and toddlers complete simple tasks like picking up their toys.

    Help Understand Categories

    • Sort items in a variety of different ways to teach concepts such as alike and different, size and colors. For example, have children sort their building blocks by colors.
