What is the Marine Corps Marathon?

The Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) is a 26.2-mile race that takes place annually in Washington, D.C. in late October or early November. This marathon is certified as a Boston Marathon Qualifier, meaning participants can use their time to enter the prestigious Boston Marathon.

    History

  1. The MCM was first run in 1976 to increase recruitment for the marine corps after the Vietnam War.
  2. Size

  3. The MCM caps its size at 30,000 entrants, making it the fifth-largest marathon in the United States and the tenth-largest in the world.
  4. Course

  5. The race starts in Arlington, Virginia, crosses into downtown D.C., and finishes at the Marine Corp Memorial.

  7. There are 12 water stops and three food stops along the course.
  8. Fun Fact

  9. The MCM is the largest marathon that does not offer prize money to the winners, which has earned it the nickname, "The People's Marathon."
