Although psittacosis is primarily a disease that affects birds, it is not species specific; therefore, the illness can be contracted by humans. Caused by the bacterium, Chlamydophila, psittacosis is diagnosed through a blood test and treated with antibiotics, particularly tetracycline and chloramphenicol. After an incubation period of five to 14 days, these symptoms appear in progressive order.

    High Fever

  1. This is a typical response of the immune system to any pathological illness, but if associated with other symptoms linked to this disease, prompt treatment is recommended.
  2. Joint Pain

  3. This may resemble flu-like symptoms and includes head and neck pain.
  4. Severe Nosebleed

  5. This is medically known as epistaxis.
  6. Headache

  7. Meningitis may be suspected at this point.
  8. Enlarged Spleen

  9. This occurs at the end of the first week of the illness.
  10. Respiratory Problems

  11. They progress from chest tightness to a cough to lung damage.
