Focus

EIA focuses on promoting market development and competitiveness through domestic and international policy efforts. In the US, they lobby not only Congress but also state governments. Current efforts center on electronics waste, heavy metal restrictions and energy efficiency requirements.
Membership

The Electronics Industry Alliance has approximately 1300 member companies from the scientific, defense, space and consumer electronics sectors.
What Makes It an Alliance

The EIA is an alliance because it is made up of six organizations. These include the Telecommunications Industry Association, the Electronic Components Assemblies & Materials Association, JEDEC, the National Science & Technology Education Partnership (previously the Electronics Industry Foundation) and the Internet Security Alliance. Consumer electronics companies also cooperate separately in EIA's Environmental Issues Council.

The ElA holds the right to accreditation through the American National Standards Institute. They help companies move through the standards process for various electronics components.
Other Meanings

EIA also stands for the Environmental Information Association, the Energy Information Administration, the Environmental Investigation Agency and the European Intermodal Association. It is also the abbreviation for Environmental Impact Assessment.
