Definition of Hemorrhoids
If you experience pain, itching, swelling or irritation in your anus area, or fecal leakage, you may have developed hemorrhoids. Physicians can confirm hemorrhoids via a rectal exam, or by using an anoscope, proctoscope or sigmoidoscope.

Effects

In rare instances, hemorrhoids may cause anemia due to chronic bleeding. In addition, hemorrhoids may become strangulated, which occurs when internal hemorrhoids have lost their blood supply.

To help prevent hemorrhoids, eat fruits, vegetables and grains, drink six to eight glasses of water daily and take fiber supplements, such as Metamucil and Citrucel. In addition, exercising, avoiding sitting for prolonged periods and avoiding straining all contribute to hemorrhoid prevention.
Considerations

Although you should see your physician when you experience severe pain and bleeding from hemorrhoids, you can also use self-care methods for relief. Consider applying ice packs on the anus area to reduce inflammation, using moist towelettes after a bowel movement and using an over-the-counter hemorrhoidal cream.
