Effects
-
According to the Mayo Clinic, pain, tingling and numbness in limbs may be symptoms of degenerative disk disease. Thoracic degenerative disk disease can also cause slumped posture, or hyperkyphosis, making breathing difficult.
Diagnosis Procedures
-
The doctor will ask questions about your symptoms. This is no time to be shy or brave. Address all of your discomfort and pain. The doctor will perform a neurological exam and may order medical imaging.
-
Treatments
-
When symptoms are mild, alternative medicine treatments may provide relief. Doctors may prescribe physical therapy, pain relievers and exercise. Surgery may be suggested In severe cases.
Potential
-
Thoracic degenerative disk disease can cause spinal stenosis, or narrowing of the spinal canal. While fairly common in people over 50, get immediate attention if incontinence or a loss of bladder and bowel control develops.
Warning
-
While degenerative disk disease is considered a normal part of aging, it can be the result of injury, heredity or illness. Seeking medical treatment when symptoms first appear may prevent chronic pain syndrome.
