Cat Toxoplasmosis Symptoms

Toxoplasmosis is a bit of a mystery. Caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii, many cats harbor the parasite but are not affected by disease. Others, typically those with comprised immunity, suffer horribly from the parasite's effects. Indoor felines are less likely to contract Toxoplasmosis as their outdoor counterparts, who may eat infected, dead animals. Fortunately, the disease is easily detected by a blood test. There is no cure, only preventative measures.

  1. Asymptomatic

    • The majority of cats infected with Toxoplasmosis will not display outward symptoms.

    Common Symptoms

    • If your cat does display symptoms, she will probably be lethargic, listless, feverish and refuse to eat.

    Pneumonia

    • The acute stage typically results in pneumonia and upper respiratory distress. This can be fatal if not treated promptly.

    Vision

    • Your cat's eyes can be affected during chronic stages of the disease, which causes retinal inflammation, abnormal pupils and, ultimately, blindness.

    Neurological Problems

    • End-stage Toxoplasmosis symptoms include ear twitching, problems with coordination, difficulty chewing and swallowing, circling, seizures, and loss of bowel and bladder control.
