The Argyle Mine in western Australia, an open-pit hard rock mine, is the source of more diamonds than any other mine in the world and also the source of 90 percent to 95 percent of the world's rare pink diamonds. Though pink diamonds have been discovered in other countries, including Brazil and India, Argyle pink diamonds have achieved legendary status.

Rio Tinto Limited, owner of the Argyle Mine, markets the diamonds annually at the international Pink Diamond Tender, attended by diamond collectors and experts. The 2009 Tender, which marks the 25th anniversary of the invitation-only event, is in Mumbai in August.
