What Is a Stun Gun?
There are a variety of items that people carry for personal security, including pepper spray or mace. A stun gun is another type of personal security device that can be used to ward off an intruder.
-
Identification
-
A stun gun is a hand-held device that administers an electric shock when it is discharged while touching another person.
Function
-
Electrical current passes from a battery within the stun gun to be transmitted through a probe at the end of the gun. The current effects the muscular and neurological systems of the body, resulting in a loss of coordination and balance, confusion and disorientation.
-
Effects
-
A stun gun only provides enough voltage to immobilize an assailant for a few minutes. It takes one ampere of electrical current to kill a human being, and the typical stun gun only gives a one to four milliamp shock, which is .1 to .4 percent of a lethal shock.
Features
-
Stun guns will work on people who are drunk or under the effects of drugs as well as through clothing. Most stun guns are shaped like rectangular boxes with the handle on one of the shorter sides and the probes on the opposite side, but there is also a variation that is shaped like a flashlight.
Considerations
-
Stun guns are not legal in every state and city. The states of Hawaii, Massachusetts, Michigan, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Wisconsin and Illinois all have placed bans on the use of stun guns in 2009.
