What Are the Six Flags That Have Flown Over Texas?
In the course of its history, Texas has existed under the flags of six different nations. They serve as a testament to the richness and diversity of the state's culture...as well as serving as the inspiration for the Six Flags Over Texas theme park (which branched out to include other theme parks all over the county).
-
Spain
-
Texas was first ruled by Spaniards exploring the New World. They controlled the territory from 1519 to 1685, and again from 1690 to 1821.
France
-
France claimed Texas in the interim between Spanish rule: from 1685 to 1690.
-
Mexico
-
Mexico claimed Texas following its independence from Spain. The Mexican flag flew over Texas from 1821 to 1836.
The Republic of Texas
-
Texas itself was an independent republic from 1836 to 1845, after breaking away from Mexico.
The United States
-
Obviously, Texas is currently a part of the United States, having joined the Union in 1845 and remained with it until the present day...save for one four-year period in the 1860s.
The Confederacy
-
During the U.S. Civil War, Texas sided with the Confederacy and remained a Confederate state until the South's defeat in 1865.
