What Are the Benefits of Fair Trade Coffee?

In recent years, sustainable foods have increased greatly in popularity. Along with an increased awareness of organically grown produce and naturally raised meat, there has also been an emphasis on economically just foods. Fair Trade coffee is perhaps the best known of the Fair Trade movement, and can be found in the aisles of many mainstream grocery stores, as well as both local coffee shops and national chains.   1. Definition

    • "Fair Trade" is a certification based on standards for pay and labor standards for workers and farmers. The goal of the fair trade movement is to help lift third-world workers and farmers (such as those who grow and harvest coffee) out of poverty, not merely to enhance corporate profits.

    How Fair Trade Companies Work

    • Many fair trade coffee companies are cooperatives, where the workers and farmers are members of the cooperative, and share in the profits of the company.

    Benefits of Fair Trade

    • By buying fair trade certified products, you can ensure that the workers who made the product, or in this case, the farmers who grew the coffee, were paid just wages, and work under just conditions.

    • Most products submit to certification by the "Fairtrade Labelling Organization", which uses the "International Fairtrade Certification Mark." Two organizations, TransFair USA and TransFair Canada, currently use the separate "Fair Trade Certified Mark".
