- In addition to Hamlin and Olivier, the movie featured significant roles for Burgess Meredith, Maggie Smith, Clare Bloom and Judi Bowker. Hamlin portrayed the youthful Perseus while Olivier played the god Zeus.
- In the movie, the trials and tribulations of Perseus are followed as he must battle against an assortment of monsters to finally be able to win the hand of the princess Andromeda, played by Bowker. Perseus, who is the son of Zeus from one of his many affairs, garners help from the gods throughout the film.
- Among the many creatures of mythology that the movie includes, the most intriguing is Medusa. She is a Gorgon, a hideous women with snakes for hair and the body of a serpent. One look from Medusa turns anything into solid stone.
- Special effects whiz Harryhausen was able to use stop-motion animation employing puppets to create an array of monsters and magical creatures. The sea monster known as the Kraken, a horribly deformed entity named Calibos, the winged horse Pegasus, and a two-headed dog are some of Harryhausen's contributions to the film.
- "Clash of the Titans" was released in the United States on June 12, 1981. As of 2009 there were plans afoot to film a remake of the movie for release in 2010.
