Signs and Symptoms of Early Pregnancy

There are a number of different signs and symptoms of early pregnancy. None of them are a definite indicator of pregnancy; women may feel all, some or none of these symptoms. The only way to confirm a pregnancy is by taking a lab test (available at medical clinics) or a home pregnancy test.

  1. Missed Period

    • The first symptom many women notice is a missed period. Most women choose to take a home pregnancy test after a missed period to find out for certain.

    Swollen Breasts

    • Within a couple weeks of becoming pregnant, the breasts may become very swollen, appearing larger, fuller and tender to the touch.

    Nausea and Vomiting

    • Commonly referred to as morning sickness, nausea and/or vomiting can occur during any time of the day or night, but is most common early in pregnancy.

    Bleeding Gums

    • Some women experience gum sensitivity when brushing their teeth, and may even notice some blood in their saliva when spitting toothpaste into the sink.

Twinges or Pain on the Sides of the Abdomen

    • Small twinges of pain may be experienced on either side of the abdomen during early pregnancy; this is often a result of the fertilized egg burrowing itself.

    Feeling Tired

    • Fatigue is a common symptom of early pregnancy; some women may feel the urge to take a much needed nap during the day.
