Plotters are an architect's best friend. They can be used not only for architectual designs but many other structural design purposes such as aviation and automotive designs.

What is a Plotter used for?
-
A plotter is a device that prints graphical plots, usually connected to a computer. This nature of device is known as a vector graphics printing device.
The Difference Between a Plotter and a Printer
-
Plotters use pens, unlike printers, which use ink cartridges or toners, and therefore can only be used in the purpose of printing line art, not dynamically colored graphics. Another significant difference is the complex instruction set that plotters use to generate the graphics on a sheet of paper, which is far more complicated than what a printer uses to print, since a plotter must be instructed to lift the pen from the paper, among other things.

Early Plotters
-
The earliest plotters were used by means of putting a piece of paper on a roller, which moved the paper vertically for vertical motion, and the pen horizontally for horizontal motion. The newest plotters started using electronic controllers holding the pens, interchanging them and allowing for multiple colors to be used.
Vinyl Sign Cutters
-
Vinyl sign cutters are used for the purpose of creating billboards or posters that can resist street conditions and of course create images on very sturdy surfaces. Vinyl sign cutters can also make vinyl designs for automobiles or sailboats. These kinds of plotters are usually applied for the purpose of creating mono-colored vinyls.
Cost
-
As a rule, plotters are much more expensive than regular printers, largely because they are used for specialized printing for engineering and design.
