Inground swimming pools offer a place to relax, get exercise and beautify the landscape of a yard, but it comes at a price. Building and maintaining an inground swimming pool can be expensive. Several factors determine the extent of the expense.

    Types

  1. There are 3 options when installing an inground pool. Concrete, fiberglass and vinyl lined are the most common types of pools. Each type of pool has its own pros and cons for different areas of the country. Typically, the cost of a concrete pool is the most expensive. Fiberglass is the cheapest and a vinyl-lined pool falls somewhere between the 2.
  2. Zoning

  3. Building permits for installing a pool are required in most states. The fee varies by state and by the cost of the pool being installed.
  4. Filtration System

  5. There are several options for filter systems, each with differing costs. Some, like the sand-filtration system, require a large amount of water to backwash the filter when it is clogged with sand.
  6. Fencing

  7. Inground swimming pools require fencing around them, for safety reasons. A secure fence will add thousands of dollars to the cost of a swimming pool.
  8. Extras

  9. Additional options--like heaters, decking, lighting--will also add to the cost of inground pools.
