Job Description for Graphic Design

The U.S. Bureau for Labor Statistics predicts that the need for workers in the field of graphic design will increase by 10 percent over the next two decades, resulting in the creation of 26,000 new jobs for graphic artists. Graphic artists play an important role in many fields, including publishing, advertising, web site designing and printing.

  1. Types

    • Graphic artists design a number of items, including the layout for periodicals, promotional displays, packaging, marketing brochures, logos, signs and web pages. Graphic design can involve many types of media, including illustrations, photography, computer software and animation.

    Concept

    • Before beginning work on a design project, the graphic artist meets with the customer to determine the purpose of the work. Together, the graphic artist and the customer make decisions about the message, media and vision of the design.

    Sketches

    • After meeting with the customer, the graphic artist creates sketches that give a preview of what the finished work will look like.

    Presentation

    • Once sketches are complete, the graphic artist presents the sketches to the customer to get his approval before continuing. If the customer makes any suggestions for improvement, the graphic artists incorporates them and presents the sketches again.

    Finished Product

    • Once final approval is given, the graphic artist creates the finished product, using the tools necessary for the media. These may include paint, charcoal, pencils, ink and computers.
