- A box spring is a wooden frame covered in fabric and generally acts as a foundation for a mattress.
- Boxsprings are primarily used to prolong the life of the mattress, as they often help to absorb shock, but they also are used to raise the mattress of the floor, making it easier to get in and out of bed. Perhaps most importantly, they are used to create a flat foundation for the mattress.
- The box spring was first used in the late 19th century to provide a flat surface for mattresses and to lift them off of dirt floors.
- There are two main types of box springs: the high profile, or standard box spring, and the low profile box spring. The standard box spring is nine inches tall and a low profile box spring is about five inches. While the size of the box spring does not make a difference in terms of function, the high profile box spring is generally considered to be more sophisticated.
- While box springs are popular in western culture, they are rarely used in eastern culture. Many eastern cultures simply place a futon mattress on the floor, totally foregoing any type of foundation at all. A second alternative, seen around the world, is the platform bed frame, which provides wooden slats that act as a foundation for the mattress.
