Becoming a landscaper can be done through several different ways. Though landscaping involves plants and trees, not everyone who works in the field is involved hands on. A variety of educational and experience levels are seen in landscaping crews, designers and architects.

    Landscaping Crew

  1. Generally perform assigned outdoor tasks---prior landscape knowledge not required.
    Hands on work from pruning, mowing and other activities.
  2. Owner of Landscaping Company

  3. Manages all aspects of the landscaping business including hiring, marketing and bookkeeping--besides managing job sites. Business knowledge required.
  4. Landscape Designer

  5. Design and implementation of landscape plans working mainly working with residential homeowners. Often requires certificate program, two- or four-year degree in landscape science or related field.
  6. Landscape Architect

  7. Work with businesses on a commercial level as well as high end homeowners. Design the overall look of large projects such as schools, shopping centers and business offices. Projects can include landscape preservation in nature and wildlife settings. Four-year degree in landscape science ---master's degree preferred.
  8. Specialties

  9. Niches in the landscaping industry include contractors who specifically work in certain landscaping fields. These include laying of concrete, installing irrigation systems, and carpentry for outdoor purposes.
