Hydrogen Peroxide Treatments for Acne

Hydrogen peroxide is an effective treatment for acne and is released by products that contain benzoyl peroxide. A variety of lotions and creams contain benzoyl peroxide in both over-the-counter and prescription formulas.

Function

When applied to the skin, benzoyl peroxide penetrates the outer layer of skin, releasing hydrogen peroxide. Once it is exposed to benzoyl peroxide, the bacteria that causes acne dies.

Usage

Benzoyl peroxide should be continuously used, even when breakouts are not present. The effects of hydrogen peroxide are most effective when used daily on areas where outbreaks of acne are most likely to occur, such as the forehead, nose, and chin.

Types

Benzoyl peroxide is available in many forms, including soaps, creams, gels, lotions, facial masks and sticks. Brand names for benzoyl peroxide include Acetoxyl, Benoxyl, Benzac, Clearasil, Dermoxyl, Desquam, Oxy 10, Solugel, and Xerac.

Risks

Benzoyl peroxide should not be used for people who have had allergies to peroxide, dermatitis, eczema, and red or raw skin. Pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children under 12 should not use products containing benzoyl peroxide.

Side Effects

Benzoyl peroxide has a variety of side effects, including irritation of the skin, rash, burning, scaling, swelling, dryness, or peeling skin.
