Chronic Idiopathic Constipation is a condition characterized by difficulty making bowel movements that is not caused by any type of bowel dysfunction, disorder or disease that is not relieved through diet or laxative usage. Amitiza is the prescription drug commonly used to treat idiopathic constipation.

Amitiza works by stimulating the production of fluid within the bowels that increases the movement of intestinal muscles, making it easier to pass stool.
Types

Amitiza is available in 24 mcg or 8 mcg capsule form. Normally, the 24 mcg is the dosage given for the treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation.

Dosage

A medical physician will determine the appropriate dosage and frequency of the drug; however, the makers of Amitiza recommend taking the pill with food and 8 full ounces of water.
Risks

People who have gallstones, Crohn's disease, diarrhea, hernia, impacted bowels, diverticulitis, and polyps make have complications of their conditions while taking Amitiza. In addition, pregnant women are not advised to take the drug.
Side Effects

Amitiza can cause a variety of side effects--including stomach problems, sore throat, headaches, dizziness, swelling in the extremities, joint or muscle pain, cold sweats, and anxiety.
