What Is a Phlebotomy Technician?

Phlebotomy technicians have an essential role in the clinical laboratory process, as their main job duty is drawing patient's blood for testing. They are employed in hospitals, clinics, private practices, diagnostic laboratories and blood banks.

  1. Blood Draws

    • Phlebotomists acquire training to learn how to draw blood quickly, efficiently and safely, with little discomfort to the patient. Using venipuncture and other methods, they become very skilled on the job, because they draw numerous samples every day.

    Specimen Handling

    • Phlebotomy technicians properly label and store samples, and deliver them to the laboratory or drop-off point.

    Quality Control

    • Their job duties include ensuring quality control throughout the process, making sure specimens are not contaminated.

    Computer Work

    • Phlebotomy technicians do data entry and record keeping on the computer, entering patient information and blood testing results.

    Clerical Duties

    • They may be expected to do some clerical tasks as well, including reception work, answering the phone, and writing down requests for blood draws.
