What Is Required to Become a Flight Attendant?
Flight attendants make sure that airline passengers follow security and safety regulations, and help make flights enjoyable and comfortable for these travelers. No formal education is required because on-the-job training is provided, but airlines have many other requirements, which vary by company.

A high school diploma or the equivalent is required for all flight attendants. An Associate's or Bachelor's degree gives the person an edge in this highly-competitive career choice. Some preferred majors include psychology, communication, nursing, police science, education and hospitality.
FAA Certification

Flight attendants are required to be certified by the Federal Aviation Administration, which involves completing an approved proficiency check after training is completed. They must demonstrate proficiency in emergency evacuation, medical emergency and security procedures.

Customer Service

Some airlines require customer service experience and nearly all airlines prefer this type of experience. This can include a wide variety of jobs such as waiting tables, working in a department store or answering the phone at an office.
Appearance

Flight attendants must have a neat appearance, and each airline has specific conservative grooming rules. Usually they do not allow facial hair on men, unusual makeup, visible tattoos or piercings except for ear piercings.
Physical Qualifications

Applicants must be tall enough to reach overhead bins, and there are usually maximum height regulations as well. Vision must be correctable to 20/30.
