What Is Comfrey Root Extract?

Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) is a plant belonging to the Borage family, normally found growing in or around watery places. The leaf and root extracts of this plant has been used since medieval times for alleviating a large number of ailments. Dr. Nicholas Culpeper--Queen Elizabeth I's court physician--has praised this plant and its curative properties extensively in his herbal book.

  1. Back Pain

    • Comfrey root extract is instrumental in alleviating lower and upper back pain, as in the case of slipped discs.

    Swelling

    • Comfrey root extract in ointment form can also be used to reduce swelling, sprains and injured muscles. It can also reduce arthritic swellings considerably.

    Inflamed Skin

    • A superficial skin inflammation or a small wound can be cured by the application of Comfrey root extract.

    Broken Bones

    • Comfrey root extracts have been used since ancient times to mend broken bones and heal injured muscle.

    Varicose Ulcers

    • Weeping sores and varicose ulcers can be cured by the topical application of Comfrey root extract to the inflamed part to draw out the "evil humors."
