How Become a Tax Preparer
People choose to have their taxes prepared by professionals for many different reasons. Becoming a tax preparer can be a good way to earn extra money during the tax season and it could lead to a rewarding full-time career.

Who Can Become a Preparer
-
Anyone with a knowledge of tax matters or a desire to learn can become a tax preparer. Typically, individuals who wish to prepare taxes professionally should have some type of formal training. The IRS has announced plans to require all paid tax preparers to take a national competency exam, starting in mid-2011.
Where to Find Training
-
If you have little or no experience in preparing taxes, there are many places to find training. You can take an online course or check with a local tax preparation business, many of which are open year-round, to see when they offer training courses.

Licenses and Registration
-
In 2009, only two states, California and Oregon, required tax preparers to obtain a license. The IRS has announced plans, though, to require all tax preparers to register with the IRS, and to pass a competency test.
About PTINS
-
A PTIN is a preparer tax identification number. It is used in place of the preparer's Social Security number on returns prepared and can be obtained by registering with the IRS.
When to Find Work
-
Tax season typically lasts three months between January and April. Although April 15 is the deadline for filing tax returns, many preparers are employed year-round to provide tax advice and audit assistance.
