Common Blood Test Parameters

Doctors can read a patient's blood test lab results and know what the markings mean because the tests come with parameters. These tell the doctor whether the results are normal.

  1. Common Blood Tests

    • Some of the common blood tests are cholesterol levels, complete blood count (CBC), blood urea nitrogen (BUN) creatinine, amylase, albumin and globulins. The latter are liver functions.

    Reading the Results

    • The blood tests read in ranges. There are high ranges, low ranges and normal ranges. The ideal range is normal.

    Significance of Results

    • The blood can tell a lot about a body and how it is functioning. It can be like a map for the doctor to read, especially if the results are abnormal.

    Warnings For Abnormal Results

    • Abnormal results could mean there is a problem with an area or organ of the body. Further studies may have to be done.

    Misconceptions

    • Sometimes the results can be wrong, especially depending on different factors in the patient's life such as medications being taken or certain foods eaten before the test.

    Normal Blood Test Results

    • A normal cholesterol is under 200. A normal CBC is 42 to 47. A normal BUN creatinine is between 5 and 35. Amylase is normal at 25 to 123, depending on male or female. Albumin should be between 35 and 48.
