What Type of Paint Should Be Used in Bathrooms?

Bathrooms are one of the most humid rooms in a home. Mildew growth is common, as well as stains on bathroom walls. Choosing the correct bathroom paint is critical.

Sheen

Avoid using flat paint; satin or a higher level of sheen is recommended, because it will be easier to clean.

Color

Dark colors will make the bathroom appear smaller. Light colors will make the walls seem farther apart and create the illusion that the room is larger.

Mildew Resistance

Mildew-resistant paint has added chemical agents that inhibit the growth of mildew and fungi in humid rooms such as bathrooms.

Scrubbable

Bathroom walls attract hairspray, makeup and water stains. Scrubbable paints allow walls to be washed without affecting the paint color.

Types

Use interior paint for the inside of a bathroom. Sometimes homeowners use exterior paint in bathrooms because they think it will last longer, but exterior paint has added chemicals that are not safe indoors.
