What Are the Different Types of Motorcycles?
The motorcycle is commonplace in our culture. There are various types, and in each category there can be found variations on the original style. Each type of motorcycle varies, sometimes subtly, sometimes dramatically from other types of motorcycles.
-
Cruisers
-
One of the most common types of motorcycles is the cruiser. As the name implies, this style of motorcycle has a more laid-back riding position, with the rider sitting straight up. This type of motorcycle tends to be heavy, but it is typically large enough for there to be a passenger to ride comfortably. In the United States, the Harley-Davidson is the most well-known type of cruiser, but other manufacturers also make this style of motorcycle.
Sport bike
-
The sport or street bike varies greatly from the cruiser. This type of motorcycle can be described as flashy, and is frequently associated with high speeds. This motorcycle is usually light and the rider tends to be in a more hunched-over riding position. While there is room for a passenger, it is typically not as comfortable for the passenger. The most common manufacturers of the street bike are based in Japan, such as Kawasaki, Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha.

Sport-tourer
-
This style of motorcycle combines the weight, riding position and roominess of a cruiser with the style and speed of a sport bike. This motorcycle is designed for long-distance trips and could be considered a more luxurious motorcycle. Heated hand grips, hard luggage for storage and anti-lock brakes are just some of the higher-end accessories available on this type of motorcycle. The Honda Goldwing is a very popular sport-tourer.
Off-road or Dirt Bike
-
The off-road motorcycle, or dirt bike, is very popular and appeals to young riders as well as adult riders. This style of bike is designed specifically for off-road use and is very simple and stripped-down compared to the other style of motorcycles. It is not legal to ride in the streets, but it can be ridden on trails or on a track. This motorcycle is very light, has nubby tires for traction and is designed to hold up even when the bike is dropped. KTM, Honda and Suzuki are just a few manufacturers that sell this type of motorcycle.
Dual-sport
-
The dual-sport style of motorcycle is designed for both on- and off-road use. It is street legal, unlike an off-road-only bike, and it is capable of changing riding environments as conditions change. Without needing a separate motorcycle, the dual-sport can go from pavement to dirt without thought. This style of motorcycle cannot tackle extreme off-road conditions, but it is capable of simple off-road use. Suzuki, KTM and Yamaha are dual-sport manufacturers.
Standard
-
The standard is considered the most basic and versatile motorcycle available. It is considered a traditional, or naked, bike because of the lack of accessories. Therefore, traditional bikes tend to be more affordable. The upright riding position, light weight and smaller size make this a great motorcycle for beginners. Ducati and Buell are standard manufacturers.
