About Entertainment Paralegal Careers

Paralegals are responsible for performing research to assist lawyers and law firms with their cases. In the case of entertainment paralegals, this involves helping lawyers who represent entertainers of all types.

  1. Function

    • Some tasks entertainment paralegals perform are filing for copyrights and trademarks, preparing drafts of contracts for those that will be employed by performers, and researching terms and conditions of contracts presented to performers by production companies, record studios and publishers.

    Types

    • Many entertainment paralegals work with attorneys employed by large music, movie, modeling or literary agents. Others may work for independent attorneys that are employed by several smaller agents or directly by entertainers.

    Work Locations

    • Most cities have at least a small entertainment industry that may support the need for an entertainment paralegal, but the majority of jobs in the industry are found in Los Angeles and New York, which are the main hubs for the entertainment industry.

    Education

    • There is no federal or state mandated education required for entertainment paralegals, but most employers look for applicants with a minimum of an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a paralegal or pre-law program. Alternately, they may accept the application of a paralegal who completed a paralegal training program approved by the American Bar Association.

    Certification

    • Many entertainment paralegals obtain accreditation from a nationally recognized paralegal group, such as the National Association of Legal Assistants, the National Federation of Paralegal Associations and the American Alliance of Paralegals.
