What Education Is Needed to Become a Forest Ranger?

Most forest rangers work for the state or federal government, patrolling forests to gather information on tree populations, evaluate fire danger levels, and assist campers and hikers. They also enforce all ordinances and regulations regarding forest conservation and recreational use.

  1. Typical Minimum Education

    • Nearly all forest ranger jobs require a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

    Another Possibility

    • Some employers accept applicants with an Associate's degree along with a certain level of related experience, typically at least 2 years. Intense competition for these jobs, however, makes it difficult to obtain one without the 4-year degree.

    Field of Study

    • You should major in forestry, forest technology, environmental science, natural resource management, biology or a related field.

    Coursework

    • Coursework should include botany, forest ecology, forest resource management, forest protection, tree physiology and taxonomy, wildlife habitat, land surveying, and other natural resources courses.

    Military Service

    • Education and experience obtained through military service often can substitute for the degree requirements.
