Microsoft Excel can be a complicated program to learn, but fortunately it is broken down into smaller parts that allow the user to focus on the specific operations needed rather than understanding the whole system from the beginning.

  1. Major Parts

    • Using Excel software involves a hierarchical approach where the major parts are grouped into large areas such as, "Insert," "Page Layout," "Formulas," "Data" and other approaches.

    Insert Options

    • The "Insert" section allows for the additional of varying useful options such as tables, pictures, charts, hyperlinks, headers, footers and text boxes.

    Page Layout

    • "Page Layout" in Excel allows the user to control how the spreadsheet information appears, from setting margins, the orientation (portrait or landscape) and themes, which enhance the appearance.

    Formulas

    • Excel includes a large variety of formulas for various calculations in areas such as financial, statistical, date and time, logical, mathematics as well as more esoteric functions.

    Data Analysis

    • The "Data" section of Excel allow the user to sort and filter data columns and rows, convert text entries into tabular information and search through spreadsheet rows for duplicate information.

    • The "Developer" parts of Excel include ways to create and use macros, coding with Visual Basic and working with XML source code.
