Adverse Effects of Estrogen Cream

Estrogen cream is a topical treatment prescribed to alleviate one of the unpleasant effects of menopause: a very dry vagina. However, the body can absorb a small amount of estrogen from this cream, which can cause some adverse effects if used for a prolonged time frame.

  1. Common Effects

    • The most common side effects are breakthrough bleeding or spotting, and abnormally long periods.

    Other Adverse Effects

    • Other somewhat common side effects can include vaginitis, breast tenderness or pain, and an increased or reduced interest in sex.

    Less Likely Effects

    • Dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, indigestion, nausea and bloating also can occur when using estrogen cream.

    Drug Interactions

    • Estrogen absorbed from the cream can interact with numerous other medications, including cyclosporine, dantrolene, anti-coagulants, barbiturates, antidepressants and other drugs.

    Warning

    • Estrogen, though rarely, can cause cardiovascular problems. Symptoms should be reported to a physician immediately; they include chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness, slurred speech, sudden severe headache, blurred vision, or swelling of hands, feet or legs.
