Fosamax Side Effects on the Heart

Fosamax is a drug used to treat bone loss due to osteoporosis. It can also be taken to prevent or slow down the effects of osteoporosis. However, as with all drugs, Fosamax has some side effects, and its side effects on the heart can be particularly worrying.

  1. Irregular Heartbeat

    • According to ScienceDaily.com, a study showed that one out of 20 people taking Fosamax experience an irregular heartbeat known as atrial fibrillation (see Resources).

    Blood Clots

    • Taking Fosamax can also lead to an increased risk of getting a blood clot in the heart due to atrial fibrillation. In some cases these blood clots can be fatal.

    Chest Pains

    • Chest pains can result from an irregular heart beat caused by Fosamax.

    Congestive Heart Failure

    • Extreme cases of atrial fibrillation can lead to congestive heart failure.

    Stroke

    • An irregular heartbeat can also lead to a stroke. It is extremely important that patients experiencing atrial fibrillation be under close supervision of a doctor.
