Clerical Job Description Example

Clerical jobs are available in a myriad of work settings, including financial corporations, law firms, medical offices, trucking companies, manufacturing industries and educational facilities. A wide range of jobs within the clerical field also are available, from the most basic entry-level file clerk to executive administrative assistants.

  1. Receptionist Work

    • Two main job duties often include welcoming visitors to the facility and answering the telephone. Clerical workers schedule appointments, take messages and provide information.

    Correspondence and Filing

    • Clerical workers make photocopies, send faxes and do filing of correspondence and other documents. Clerical workers may receive, sort and distribute mail, and prepare outgoing mail as well.

    Computer Work

    • Creating spreadsheets and doing data entry is typically part of the job description, as is some word processing. Clerical workers often update bookkeeping records on the computer.

    Administrative Work

    • Clerical workers may set up travel arrangements for executive personnel, schedule team meetings, reserve meeting rooms and type up meeting agendas.

    Software Proficiency

    • Usually, clerical employees must be proficient in different types of software so they can create mass mailings from word processing programs, run a variety of types of reports and maintain databases.
