Esophageal Motility Disorder Symptoms

The esophagus, which conducts food from the mouth to the stomach, is subject to several disorders that affect the way the food is propelled down the esophagus. These are called motility disorders.

Obstructions

Several abnormal functions can compromise the way the esophagus is supposed to work. According to the Merck Manual of Home Information, a common one is a stricture at the lower esophageal sphincter.

Esophageal Spasms

In some people, nerves governing how the esophagus propels food down to the stomach may malfunction, causing muscle spasms and swallowing difficulties.

Achalasia

In achalasia, the rhythmic contractions of the esophagus are significantly decreased by a nerve disorder and the lower sphincter "fails to relax normally" (Merck Manual of Home Information).

Esophageal Pouches

Abnormal pouches, or diverticula in the esophagus, can cause difficulties swallowing. When severe, the pouch can be removed surgically.

Warning

Besides disruptions in eating, esophageal motility disorders may be a sign of esophageal cancer, so a doctor should always be consulted.
