Facts About Indian Airlines

Indian Airlines is a large domestic airline based in India. The airline serves over 60 cities in India and bordering Asian countries and operates a large fleet of Airbus aircraft. The airline also has a relatively dubious safety record.

  1. History

    • Indian Airlines was set up in 1953 to nationalize the industry in India. Seven former domestic airlines were merged to become the new carrier. The airline renewed focus on customer service in 1990 during India's economic liberalization.

    Ownership

    • Indian Airlines is owned by the state of India. In 2009, they are in the process of merging with Air India.

    Routes and Hubs

    • The airline flies to 64 destinations, mostly domestically in India and to several neighboring countries. Its main bases are Ghandi International Airport in Delhi, Chhatrapati Shivaji International in Mumbai, Chennai International in Chennai and Netaji Subhash International near Calcutta.

    Fleet

    • In 2009, Indian Airlines operates 74 aircraft--all Airbus A320 series. The airline also has 21 Airbus A320s on order. As of March 2009, the fleet's average age is 12 years.

    Incidents and Accidents

    • Since 1970, Indian Airlines has had 12 fatal events, including accidents and terrorist hijackings.
