Symptoms of Bipolar Type II Disorder

Bipolar type II is a milder form of bipolar illness, also known as manic depression. Those suffering from bipolar type II disorder still often need medical intervention to combat their symptoms, but are usually considered less destructive than people suffering full-blown bipolar disorder, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. There are a number of symptoms associated with bipolar type II.

  1. Depression

    • Depression is a feature of all bipolar disorders, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. A persistently low emotional mood or lack of physical energy is usually indicative of depression.

    Hypomania

    • Hypomania is a symptom of bipolar type II disorder, which is a persistently elevated mood or "high" that can affect rational thinking and decisions.

    Impulsive Behavior

    • Impulsive behavior can often be a sign of bipolar type II disorder. Such acts can include spending sprees, drug abuse or risky sexual activities.

    Agitation

    • Agitation can also be present in bipolar type II disorder, but is not accompanied by hallucinations or delusions.

    Treatment

    • Medication and therapy is the best way to fight bipolar type II disorder. Antidepressants like Prozac and mood stabilizers such as Lithium have proven helpful.
