Dermatologist Job Description

Dermatologists are physicians who specialize in diagnosing and treating skin disorders such as acne, fungal infections, rashes and warts. They most commonly work in hospitals, clinics, outpatient facilities and private practice.

  1. Examination

    • The dermatologist examines patients and orders any necessary diagnostic testing. He discusses the skin's condition with the patient and develops a treatment plan.

    Allergies

    • Dermatologists treat contact dermatitis and other types of skin allergies and irritations. They determine the cause and help the patient with prevention methods.

    Chronic Conditions

    • People with chronic conditions such as acne, eczema and psoriasis often see dermatologists for assistance in alleviating symptoms with topical or oral medication, or preventative methods.

    Skin Cancer

    • Dermatologists also diagnose and treat various types of skin cancer, surgically removing tumors and suspicious moles, and performing biopsies.

    Cosmetic Treatment

    • Some dermatologists perform cosmetic surgery and treatments such as chemical peels, scar removal and Botox injections.

    Salary

    • Salaries for dermatologists are lucrative. Respondents to the 2008 Physician Compensation Survey reported a range from about $290,000 to $386,000.
