What Is a Bench Grinder Used For?

Bench grinders are standard pieces of equipment in most home workshops. They are used for shaping metal, sharpening and polishing tools.

  1. Wheels

    • Grinders must be equipped with the right wheels for each task. Coarse, medium and fine grit grinding wheels as well as buffing wheels and wire brush wheels are readily available and frequently used.

    Sharpening

    • Sharpening blades is the most common application of a bench grinder. Light tools like chisels can easily be overheated on a grinder and should be finished with a whetstone.

    Balancing

    • Grinders efficiently sharpen mower blades. An unbalanced blade can be tuned by grinding waste metal from a back edge until the blade again runs true.

    Modifying Parts

    • When purchased parts like bolts or hinges don't quite fit the application, they can be quickly resized with a bench grinder.

    Refurbishing

    • When reworking rusted machine parts or tools, wire brush wheels and polishing wheels quickly remove oxides and restore smooth surfaces.
