What Is LimeWire Used for?
LimeWire is a Java-based file sharing program used with the Gnutella and BitTorrent protocols for downloading MP3s, movies and other software applications. Although similar to basic BitTorrent clients like uTorrent, LimeWire has more features and is easier to use.

LimeWire has both a paid and free version. LimeWire free works exactly like the paid version, except it contains ads and has some download restrictions.
Requirements

LimeWire has versions for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux. The system should have a minimum of 128 MB of RAM, Java 1.5 or later and an active Internet connection.

Enter the name or type of files you want to download (like MP3s, for example), then click "Search." Select a file, then click "Download" to save it to your hard drive.
Upload

Shared files that are being uploaded may cause downloads to take longer. Limit the number of files available for upload at one time by clicking "Tools" and then "Options."
Features

LimeWire features community chat, a media player, a rating system and a junk filter. You can also set "freeloader" limits and share iTunes.
