Side Effects When Removing Tattoos With Lasers

When people become tired of a tattoo design or don't like the tattoo location anymore, a gentler removal process is available compared to procedures from years ago. Laser tattoo removal breaks up the ink, allowing a person's body to flush it from their system.

Most Common Side Effect

The most common side effect when removing tattoos with lasers is redness and swelling at the area.

Pain

Some pain can be expected. People can choose to have the skin numbed with a locally-applied anesthetic or an injection.

Post-Treatment Effects

Several treatments are often needed. After each treatment, the skin either peels, or blisters and crusts, and the crust eventually sloughs off. Redness can last for a few weeks.

Additional Effects

A common side effect when removing tattoos with lasers is temporary skin darkening, and less common is temporary skin lightening.

Uncommon Effects

Scarring occurs in 5 percent or fewer treatments, as does infection. People should apply a topical antibiotic after treatment to prevent infection.
