Characteristics of Bisexual Women

The American Psychological Association defines sexual orientation as a person's romantic, emotional and sexual attraction to other individuals. Bisexual women identify themselves as being sexually attracted to both males and females.

  1. Types

    • Heterosexuality, homosexuality and bisexuality are the three main classifications of sexual orientation. Bisexual individuals are attracted to members of both sexes.

    Identification

    • A 2002 survey by the National Center for Health Statistics found 2.8 percent of women ages 18 to 44 years considered themselves bisexual. The 1993 Janus Report on Sexual Behavior showed that 3 percent of women consider themselves bisexual.

    Theories/Speculation

    • "USA Today" states that, according to a new study endorsed by the American Psychological Association, bisexuality is not just a phase in women. The study followed 79 non-heterosexual women for a decade and found that they continued to be attracted to both sexes over time.

    Expert Insight

    • According to mid-20th century scientist Alfred Kinsey, creator of the Kinsey scale, most human beings do not fall conclusively on the heterosexual or homosexual end of the scale. Many individuals fall somewhere in between.

    Significance

    • The concept of the bisexual community is complex. Some bisexual women identify with the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered) sexual minority culture, while others do not identify with it.
