What Is UV Light?

The entire electromagnetic spectrum runs from microwaves to gamma rays. Human eyes are sensitive to what is predictably called the visible light spectrum. Ultraviolet light waves have a frequency just above what the human eye can detect.

  1. Three Types of Ultraviolet Light

    • The three types of ultraviolet light are near ultraviolet, far ultraviolet and extreme ultraviolet according to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Near UV light has a slightly shorter wavelength than visible light, while extreme UV light has a wavelength slightly longer than X-rays.

    Ultraviolet Light Causes Sunburn

    • The sun gives off all types of radiation throughout the electromagnetic radiation. Ultraviolet B rays are the ones that cause sunburn.

    Fun Fact

    • Bumblebees are capable of seeing ultraviolet light.

    Ultraviolet Light and Astronomy

    • The Hubble Space telescope uses ultraviolet light to study nearby stars and galaxies. Visible light telescopes, radio telescopes and ultraviolet telescopes give scientists a better picture of the universe.

    Blakc Lights and UV Light

    • Black lights use ultraviolet bulbs to make certain objects glow. Black light posters use special plants that glow in the presence of ultraviolet radiation.
